THE FOLLOWING INTERVIEW WAS CONDUCTED BY TV WITH ONE IAN MACKAYE--VOCALIST FOR WASHINGTON BAND MINOR THREAT

TV: Compare the DC scene now with a year ago...
IAN: OK July, 1980 right...You had TEEN IDLES, THE UNTOUCHABLES, and THE BAD BRAINS--BLACK MAEKET BABY were just starting to make it at that point. A few young punks who we'd see once in a while--the Georgetown punk thing was in full swing--you had shows in bars in GT--places that would do it once and then shut down--with maybe 25 or 30 punks and maybe 30 or 40 other people at the most--We(Teen Idles)played fast as shit-totally noise--not like bullshit noise--but songs with a really rough edge...THE UNTOUCHABLES...like Alec was just crazy--he did the wildest shit you could imagine--he was doing stage dives and fucking himself up--All of this was happening like before we'd heard any of the LA stuff--both bands were playing that way--like the first band we heard from LA was BLACK FLAG and I thought this is really great--a little slow but really great--The CIRCLE JERKS we saw when we were out west--they were too polished and they were assholes--they weren't willing to go the route like getting their hair cut--you know people say like cutting your hair is like posing--well bullshit, that's conviction--you shave your head and there's no room for vanity.
TV: One glance at your lyrics and it's apparent you aren't much on booze and drugs.
IAN: I'm totally anti-drug and alcohol...
TV: In Lansing drinking is somewhat of a necessity...you know, anasthetic...
IAN: I really believe that if you hang out in a surrounding where everone is drinking whether you realize it or not there is pressure to drink--and what I hope to offer is a teenage or a young thing that doesn't demand you drink and shit--kids need an option--I think alot of kids that take this shit think nothing of themselves and that's why their such jerks...their trying to make up for themselves--this obsession with this stuff makes me sick--I fuckin hit a kid with a hammer because he blew pot smoke in my face. Alot of people use drinking and drugs as an excuse and that's what the song "BOTTLED VIOLENCE" is about--there's alot of people I know who can't fight unless their drunk--I guess I'm a pacifist in that respect...I mean not peace and love everybody but on the other hand don't go get your head kicked in--there's no point in being a cripple--like look at what happened in Philadelphia (SOA gig which ended in a bloody brawl). These Kensington kids came in and started a fight and got thrashed inside so they said come out and fight and all the DC kids ran out like "Let's kick some as s and out came these kids with baseball bats and fucked the DC kids up.
TV: Explain the song "FILLER."
IAN: FILLER's about everbody who is so impressionable that they'd change their entire way of thinking and drop all their friends just because of one person who happens to be of the opposite sex says or does...I wrote it with Geordie (Teen Idles guitarist) in mind but it's not just about him--I mean he got religion and called me a sinner--just because his girlfriend was born again.
TV: So filling his head with...
IAN: Sure it's all filler in the head, it's all bullshit--Filler's like what they put in Hostess HO-HOs...
TV: Can you just sit down and write songs or do have have to have some big inspiration?
IAN: No way man, like I wish I could do that--it's like the other night Chris and Dante were sleeping at my house and I woke up all of the sudden with this song going through my head like never before, so I got my guitar and went to the bathroom--it's about how people are so negative they make me ill so I wrote this song--"Negative" I can't just write songs somethings gotta hit me...
TV: Your vocal style is like--
IAN: I don't copy anyone--the ADOLESCENTS and all of that sound like Darby Crash--all the LA bands sound the same to me now with the exception of BLACK FLAG--certainly the best band out there...seems like people would copy them...We don't sound like anybody--thank god for that--we're just MINOR THREAT...
